#20 UMass Rallies For Dramatic 5-4 Nine-Inning Victory Over Charlotte In A-10 Semi's

    Junior Whitney Mollica's walk-off RBI-single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the 20th-ranked Massachusetts softball team a dramatic 5-4 nine-inning victory over third-seeded Charlotte in the A-10 Tournament Semifinals on Friday afternoon in Charlotte, N.C. Sophomores Sarah Reeves and Whitney Williams each homered as the Minutewomen rallied from behind three-times in a game that lasted over two and a half hours. With the win, the Minutewomen advance to the A-10 Championship Final on Saturday at 12 p.m. The championship game on Saturday will air on CBS-College Sports Television (tape-delay) at 8 p.m., but fans can listen live for free at UMassathletics.com. Due to the extended length of play in the loser's bracket, UMass' opponent in the championship game is yet to be determined. No. 3 seeded Charlotte will play No. 4 seed Fordham Saturday at 10 a.m. in the second semifinal with the winner facing the Minutewomen for the A-10 Championship at Noon. (more)

    Lauren Proctor Earns First Team ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District 1st Team Honors

    UMass senior outfielder Lauren Proctor (La Jolla, Calif.) has been named an ESPN The Magazine first-team Academic All-American as it was announced Friday in voting by members of the College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). In addition, sophomore pitcher Bailey Sanders (Durham, Conn.) earned second-team Academic All-American honors. (more)

    Behind a stifling defensive showing, the 20th-ranked Massachusetts Softball team (37-11) defeated Fordham (34-29) 2-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championship Thursday in Charlotte, N.C. Sophomore Jessica Serio went 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI as the Minutewomen move into the A-10 Semifinals. Top-seeded UMass will play No. 3 seed Charlotte on Friday at 2 p.m. (more)

  • Eight Minutewomen Garner A-10 Awards
    The 20th-ranked UMass softball team (36-11, 20-0 A-10), the No. 1 seed, will begin play in the Atlantic 10 Tournament this Thursday at 11 a.m., at D.L. Phillips Softball Complex in Charlotte, N.C. The Minutewomen will face the No. 4 seed Fordham, who defeated Saint Joseph's 1-0 in the first round of the tournament. Live video streaming is available online via UMass All-Access at UMassathletics.com. Free live audio will be available for all UMass games through Sports Juice at UMassathletics.com. Matt Goldstein and Mike Huff will call the action for UMass. GameTracker will be also be available on UMassathletics.com. Due to inclement weather forecasted for Thursday in the Charlotte area, the game time has been changed to 11 a.m.

    Balschmiter Named A-10 Pitcher of the Year, Maroney A-10 Rookie of the Year
  • Atlantic 10 Announces Softball All-Conference Team
    As announced by the league office on Monday evening, junior pitcher Brandice Balschmiter (Newark, N.Y.) has been named the 2008 Atlantic 10 Softball Player of the Year. This is Balschmiter's third-straight Pitcher of the Year award. In that same vote, freshman Lindsay Maroney (Bradford, Mass.) was tabbed as the Rookie of the Year and Elaine Sortino was named Coach of the Year for the second straight year and ninth time overall.

    Balschmiter Named USA Softball National Player Of The Week
    UMass junior pitcher Brandice Balschmiter was named USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Week for throwing back-to-back no-hitters last week, it was announced Tuesday. The honor is the first-ever for Balschmiter, who holds the nation's lowest ERA at .53.
