UMass Falls To Temple 10-3 In Atlantic 10 Championship Game

A four-goal effort by Brittney Hoffman and a six-goal first half propelled the Temple Owls to the Atlantic 10 Women's Lacrosse Championship over the UMass Minutewomen on Sunday afternoon at McGuirk Stadium. The win gives Temple (13-5) their first Atlantic 10 title since 2004 and clinches them a spot in the NCAA Tournament. UMass (7-11) received goals from Kelsey Schreiner, Jackie Lyons and Jeannette Villapiano. This was the third time in program history that UMass had made it to the conference finals. The Minutewomen knocked off three-time defending A-10 Champions Richmond 10-9 in overtime on Friday to earn a spot in the championship game. Kathleen Typadis, Julie Papaleo and Villapiano were each named to the A-10 All-Tournament Team following Sunday's game. (more)

Kathleen Typadis scored the game-tying goal with one-second remaining in regulation and then hit the game-winning goal in overtime as the No. 4 seed Massachusetts women's lacrosse team upset No. 1 seed Richmond 10-9 in overtime in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament semifinals on Friday at McGuirk Stadium. Richmond held an 8-4 halftime lead thanks to five goals from Lexie Marrocco who finished the game with six to tie an A-10 tournament game record. Marrocco's lone goal in the second half was all the scoring the Spiders could muster as the Minutewomen rallied back to knock off the three-time defending Atlantic 10 Champions. (more)

After winning four of its last six games of the regular season, the UMass women's lacrosse team earned the No. 4 seed in the Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament and will face top-seeded Richmond on Friday, April 25 (1 PM) at McGuirk Stadium. This will be the fourth time the two teams have met in tournament play in the all-time series. In the regular season, Richmond defeated the Minutewomen 17-12 in Virginia. This will be the first-ever Atlantic 10 Women's Lacrosse Tournament to be hosted by the University of Massachusetts. This will also be the first time any sport outside of football has held a league championship tournament within the confines of McGuirk Alumni Stadium. (more)

Seven Minutewomen Earn Atlantic 10 Women's Lacrosse Honors

Seven UMass women's lacrosse players earned Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors as announced by the league on Thursday afternoon. Kaytlin McCormick, Jeannette Villapiano, Julie Papaleo, and Jackie Rosenzweig were each named to the All-Conference Second-Team, while Jackie Lyons and Kelsey Schreiner were named to the All-Rookie Team. Merritt Cosgrove was named to the All-Academic Team to round out the year honors for UMass. UMass will host the Atlantic 10 Tournament starting Friday afternoon (1 PM) when the No. 4 seed Minutewomen take on No. 1 seed Richmond in the opening semifinal game. Following that will be No. 2 seed Temple facing No. 3 seed Duquesne. The championship game will be on Sunday, April 27 (1 PM) in McGuirk Stadium with the league champion earning an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

Jackie Lyons Named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week

The Atlantic 10 Conference announced on Monday that freshman midfielder Jackie Lyons (Rocky Point, N.Y.) was named the women's lacrosse Rookie of the Week. This is the second time this season that Lyons has been named Rookie of the Week, her first was awarded in February. Lyons' play helped UMass secure the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament which begins this Friday at McGuirk Stadium with the Minutewomen facing No. 1 seeded Richmond.

Duquesne Edges UMass 11-10 With Game Winning Goal In Final Seconds

Duquesne's Ashley Wood scored a pair of goals in the final 6:16 of play and fed Kathleen McNish for the game-winning goal with just 13 seconds on the clock as the Dukes defeated the UMass women's lacrosse team on Sunday at McGuirk Stadium. Both team's were fighting for the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Tournament which will be hosted by UMass. With the loss, the Minutewomen will now be the No. 4 seed in the upcoming tournament facing No. 1 seed Richmond on Friday at 1 PM. Duquesne is the No. 3 seed and will face Temple at 3:30 PM next Friday as well in McGuirk Stadium. Following the game today, UMass honored its senior class of Krissy Anderson, Julie Papaleo, Kathleen Typadis, Jeannette Villapiano, and Melynda Zwick.
