DeRosa and McCann Named UMass/Dinn Bros. Athletes of the Week Senior distance runners Christina DeRosa (Sound Beach, N.Y.) and sophomore Andrew McCann (Fayetteville, N.Y.) have been named the UMass/Dinn Bros. Athlete of the Week for the week of May 4 for their performances at the Atlantic 10 Track and Field Championships last weekend. DeRosa and McCann will be honored at the weekly Sports Luncheon on Wednesday at Noon in room 1009 of the Campus Center. (more)

Following the second day of competition, UMass wrapped up the regular outdoor track season at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships. Overall, the men placed fourth out of eleven teams, while the women placed sixth out of twelve teams. Both the men and women improved on last year's finish of eighth place for the men and tenth for the women. Overall, Rhode Island took first for both the men and women. UMass scored 62 points for the men and 60 points for the women. Next weekend, both teams will head back to the University of New Hampshire for the New England Championships.

After the first day of competition at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships, UMass currently sits in fourth place for both teams with the women being tied with La Salle. Overall, Rhode Island is presently in first place for both the men and women. Christina DeRosa and Andrew McCann had the top performances of day after both took first place in the 10K run. DeRosa set an Atlantic 10 record with a time of 35:40.68 and broke the A-10 record of 36:07.62 that she set last year. McCann also set an Atlantic 10 record with a time of 30:04.87 to qualify for the New England and IC4A Championships. In addition, McCann now holds the third fastest time at UMass and set a new facility record at the UMass Track and Field Complex. Tomorrow, UMass will wrap up the Championships with the second day of competition set to begin at 8:45 A.M.

This weekend, UMass will host the 2008 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the UMass Track and Field Complex. The two day event will begin Saturday and conclude on Sunday with both days beginning at 9:30 AM. This will be the first time that UMass has ever hosted the Atlantic 10 Championships. Live video streaming of the Championship will be available through UMass and the Atlantic 10 web site's All-Access package. UMass will look to improve on last season's results after the men placed eighth and the women finished tenth.

On Saturday, the UMass track and field teams traveled to the University of New Hampshire to participate in the UNH Pre-Conference Meet. UMass took first place in seven events, while senior Nathan Barksdale had the top performance of the day after placing second in the 200 meter dash to qualify for the New England Championships with a time of 22.31 seconds. The meet served as a final tune up for the athletes before UMass plays host to the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships next weekend. On Saturday, the UMass track and field teams will travel to the University of New Hampshire to compete in the UNH Pre-Conference Meet.
