For over 20 years, the Varsity M Club was in a dormant state. Five years ago, the idea of resurrecting the organization was put in motion. In May of 1998, the group held its first event, the Varsity M Senior Banquet. The program was well-received by the graduating seniors, a sign that the organization was back and had a very solid foundation for the future.

Since the University's earliest days, both academics and extracurricular activities have been stressed as part of a total education. Sports and intercollegiate athletics - and the associated qualities of leadership and character - are part of the fabric of UMass history.

Emphasizing this proud tradition of excellence in athletics is the Varsity M Club. The name was taken from a former organization of UMass letterwinners which supported various aspects of UMass athletics.

One of the benefits the Varsity M Club provides for the outgoing senior athletes is a gold-plated ring that every senior athlete will be presented with at the annual seniors' banquet. Most of the funding for these gifts will be provided by both annual dues for Varsity M Club members and by fund-raising events.
